For it was Vernon Corea who helped Clarence Wijewardena, Annesley Malewana and the Moonstones reach a wider audience through his radio programmes over the the airwaves of Radio Ceylon in the 1960s when the Moonstones were yearning to reach the top in the world of music and entertainment.</p> <p>The Moonstones who hailed from Ratnapura were first managed by Vernon's cousin, Sri Sangabo Corea. Sangey as he is known asked his cousin to help Clarence Wijewardena, Annesley Malewana and the group. Vernon helped them without hesitation - they visited him frequently in Maha Nuge Gardens and Vernon taught them the workings of public relations and marketing and above all he for the first time introduced their music on the English service, the Commercial Service, of Radio Ceylon. This was an absolute first, for Sinhala popular music to feature on English radio programmes in Sri Lanka. In a sense, Radio Ceylon 'discovered' the Moonstones and helped them on their way to stardom.</p> <p>What's more the Moonstones topped the English charts on Radio Ceylon. They became household names as a result of the exposure on the oldest radio station in South Asia. Vernon also took to the print media to help Clarence and Annesley and wrote the first ever article on the Moonstones in his EMCEE Column in the Ceylon Daily News in the 1960s.</p> <p>The late Clarence Wijewardena composed 'Piyaneni' as a tribute in song to Vernon's father, Reverend Canon Ivan Corea, who has been the vicar of St.Luke's Church Borella and St.Paul's Church in Milagiriya. Cannon Ivan Corea had served the poorest of the poor - the Rodiya Community in Sri Lanka. Clarence's tribute to Reverend Corea was a moving song about a father's love for his children. </p> <p>Not only did Vernon help Annesley when he was in Radio Ceylon, in the 1970s he introduced them to London and a new audience of Londoners when he played the music of the Moonstones and the Super Golden Chimes on his popular BBC Radio London 206 programme, 'London Sounds Eastern,' produced by the legendary Keith Yeomans. Many people in London, in the United Kingdom, sent in requests for songs by Clarence Wijewardena and Annesley Malewana.</p> <p>Whenever Annesley Malewana performs, whether it is in Colombo or in Melbourne he never fails to remember Vernon Corea's acts of kindness - he lifted them up when they were young musicians seeking to reach the top. Whenever Annesley sings 'Piyaneni,' he always thinks about Vernon Corea. The early demise of the great Clarence Wijewardena was a loss to the nation as he was a pioneer of Sinhala Pop music.</p> <p>Clarence Wijewardena, Annesley Malewana and the Moonstones hailed from Ratnapura in Sri Lanka. They were managed by Vernon's cousin, advertising man Sri Sangabo Corea. It was Sri Sangabo Corea who approached his cousin Vernon who was working in Radio Ceylon and asked him to help this new group from Ratnapura. Vernon Corea agreed to mentor Clarence Wijewardena, Annesley Malewana and the group - they visited him at his residence in Maha Nuge Gardens in Kollupitiya in the 1960s. It was the beginning of a very close relationship and friendship with Clarence and Annesley.</p> <p>The very first news article on the Moonstones was written by Vernon Corea for his EMCEE Column in the Ceylon Daily News. Vernon who had created history by playing Sinhala music for the first time on the English Services of Radio Ceylon soon promoted the music of the Moonstones - 'Dunhinda Manamali,' 'Mango Nanda,' were huge hits over the airwaves of the Commercial Service of Radio Ceylon.</p> <p>Clarence asked Vernon if he would write the notes for an Lotus LP Sleeve. Vernon said: "We have all shared the treat of your lovely Lyrics, your tuneful compositions, your friendly presentation and your spontaneous sense of sharing with your followers, your treasury of talent. Keep going, keep growing, keep glowing".</p> <p>Clarence and Annesley were frequent visitors to Maha Nuge Gardens when they visited Vernon. It was in Maha Nuge Gardens in Kollupitiya that Clarence and Annesley met Reverend Canon Ivan Corea, Vernon's father, before he died in 1968. Reverend Corea was a gentle human being who had championed the rights of the poor, particularly Sri Lanka's Rodiya Community when he was Vicar of St.Luke's Church, Borella. Clarence composed the heartwarming tribute to a father, 'Piyaneni' in memory of the late Reverend Canon Ivan Corea.</p> <p>The recording took place one morning in 1972 at the recording studio of Augie Ranaweera in Bambalapitiya. Clarence and Annesley were backed by the Super Golden Chimes. The musicians needed someone to provide music from a Yamaha organ - Vernon contacted the famed Helen Lucas who agreed to play. Her Yamaha organ had to be transported from her home via a lorry to Augie Ranaweera's studio. Clarence had used the Bossa nova rhythm for this beautiful tribute to Reverend Corea.</p> <p>'Piyaneni' soon became a huge hit in South Asia for Clarence Wijewardena, during his lifetime. The vocals were provided by Annesley Malewana. 'Piyaneni' has been sung by Annesley Malewana at music concerts all over the world. When he sings it Annesley can never forget the help and support of Vernon Corea when they were young musicians yearning to hit the big time in the world of popular music in Sri Lanka. </p> <p>Annesley recalls: "When we toured England in 1994 to hold musical shows, Vernon Corea who was in England requested me to sing this particular song. When I got on to the stage and started singing Vernon broke down and all of us were moved by this incident. Wherever we go, most people in foreign countries requested me to sing this song. The credit crunch and the the deepening global economic recession has placed huge pressure on families and adults with autism and Asperger's Syndrome. There are many more families below the poverty line. Many have to decide between heating and eating.</p> <p>In the United Kingdom 42 parliamentarians of all parties have signed David Drew MP's early day motion 710 on Autism Sunday, calling for greater financial support for people with autism and Asperger's Syndrome and for an end to re-possessions of homes belonging to families with autism.</p> <p>Ivan Corea said: 'The United Nations Secretary General and the UN General Assembly must address the needs of the poor on United Nations World Autism Awareness Day on 2nd April 2009. The global economic recession has brought enormous pressures onto families and adults with autism and Asperger's Syndrome. Many still suffer without proper public services. Now some have to decide between heating and eating as they face Fuel Poverty. They need help in 2009 to face the economic crisis. We appeal to the United Nations to take real action on WAAD.'</p> <p>The leaders of G20 countries meet in London on UN World Autism Awareness Day. President Barack Obama is also due in London to attend the G20 Conference. Autism Sunday was also used to lobby and campaign on the serious issues surrounding autism and Asperger's Syndrome.</p> <p>Vernon Corea wrote prayers for autism in 2002 Autism Awareness Year in the United Kingdom. These prayers were used in many churches around the world. Vernon Corea's grandson has autism - he had a deep and abiding love for his grandson.</p> <p>Vernon Corea (1927 - 2002) was a pioneering broadcaster with Radio Ceylon/SLBC and the BBC. He was the BBC's Ethnic Minorities Advisor in the late 1970s-1980s. His grandson was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder in the United Kingdom. Vernon Corea fully supported the Autism Awareness Campaign.</p> <p>He was present at the first ever service for autism at St.Paul's Cathedral in London in 2002 Autism Awareness Year. He was also a Lay Reader at Emmanuel Church in Wimbledon, South West London and at Christ Church Gipsy Hill in South East London. He spoke to so many broadcasters at the BBC about autism - he was a senior manager at the BBC and was the Corporation's Ethnic Minorities Advisor.</p> <p>Vernon Corea attended the parliamentary debates on autism in 2002 Autism Awareness Year and he was present at the historic service for autism held at St.Paul's Cathedral in London. The concert was a sell out. Cliff Richard is currently enjoying the beaches of Sri Lanka - he leaves Sri Lanka for the Maldives on Monday 26th February.</p> <p>He released his first British rock and roll single 'Move It' in 1958. Vernon Corea was an announcer with Radio Ceylon and he helped make 'Move It' a hit across South Asia when he featured Cliff Richard on his radio programs. People in India bought transistor radios to listen to Radio Ceylon. The station not only played Hindi film music they also played western popular music to their Asian audiences. Radio was King in the Indian sub-continent in the 1950s and 1960s. </p> <p>Radio Ceylon ruled the airwaves in South Asia and it played hit after hit by Cliff Richard on the All Asia beam - thousands of listeners from the Indian sub-continent wrote into Radio Ceylon requesting Cliff Richard songs.</p> <p>The Hindu Newspaper quoted the celebrated 1970s Jazz Queen of India, Asha Puthli: </p> <p>‘Asha Puthli was born and raised in Bombay. With a strong grounding in Indian classical music, she stepped forward to European opera. She learnt about Ella Fitzgerald and Nat King Cole from “Voice of America” and about Dusty Springfield and Cliff Richard from Radio Ceylon……’ </p> <p>Even though Vernon Corea became the BBC's Ethnic Minorities Adviser in the 1970s, he never met Cliff Richard. Gramophone music was broadcast from a tiny room in the Central Telegraph Office with the aid of a small transmitter built by the Telegraph Department engineers from the radio equipment of a captured German submarine.</p> <p>The results proved successful and barely three years later, on December 16, 1925, a regular broadcasting service came to be instituted.</p> <p>On December 16, 1925 the then British Governor Sir Hugh Clifford inaugurated the broadcasting service - It was first known as Colombo Radio. The name was changed to Radio Ceylon and the radio station shifted to Torrington Square on October 5, 1949.</p> <p>Radio Ceylon broadcaster Gnanam Rathinam in her book ‘The Green Light’ (Memories of Broadcasting in Sri Lanka) notes: ‘In 1943 the Broadcasting Station premises was sited in a bungalow named The Bower, in Cotta Road, Borella (in the city of Colombo). In early days the programmes in all languages were scheduled and produced by announcers who covered airtime as well.</p> <p>The Colombo radio station at ‘The Bower’ ceased broadcasts by midnight on December 31, 1949 and Radio Ceylon came into being on January 1, 1950. On January 5, 1967, it became a state corporation - the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation.</p> <p>The Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation produced some of the finest broadcasters in the world, among them - Livy Wijemanne, Vernon Corea, Pearl Ondaatje, Greg Roskowski, Tim Horshington, Claude Selveratnam, Jimmy Bharucha, Thevis Guruge, A.W. Dharmapala, Karunaratne Abeysekera, H.M. Gunasekera, S.P. Mylvaganam, Gnanam Rathinam, Nihal Bhareti, Eric Fernando, Leon Belleth and Vijaya Corea to name a few.</p> <p>I grew up in a world of broadcasting. My father, Vernon Corea joined Radio Ceylon in 1956 as a relief announcer during the Clifford Dodd era of the Commercial Service. Clifford Dodd, an Australian administrator was seconded to Radio Ceylon via the Colombo Plan. Working with Livy Wijemanne they transformed the Commercial Service making it a lucrative arm of the radio station.</p> <p>The Hindi Announcers - Gopal Sharma, Vijay Kishore Dubey, Shiv Kumar Saroj, Manohar Mahajan, Sunil Dutt (who went on to become a massive Bollywood icon), Hamid Sayani, Amin Sayani, Vijaylaksmi de Saram played a pivotal role - millions across the Indian sub-continent tuned into Radio Ceylon and subsequently the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation - making the SLBC ‘King of the Airwaves’ in South Asia. The SLBC was unbeatable.</p> <p>I remember so well as a child growing up in Sri Lanka, visiting the SLBC, entering the grand foyer - you hear the hum of the generators, the massive reception desk was your first port of call. There is only one SLBC receptionist I remember and she is Ranjini Wickremasinghe who had a ‘broadcasting romance’ and married my uncle, Vijaya Corea who went on to become the Director-General of the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation.</p> <p>The studios harked back to the golden days of Radio Ceylon - and they are preserved to this day - it was a privilege to join forces with Nihal Bahreti and Clifford Basanayake and record a whole series of radio programs for the SLBC when I last visited Sri Lanka in 2003.</p> <p>I interviewed Cliff Richard at the Greenbelt Festival in the UK - the first ever interview with Cliff for the SLBC which was broadcast in 1981 on a special program. Cliff told me that he would love to visit Sri Lanka - his wish will soon be a reality - when Cliff visits Sri Lanka- for a concert in Colombo in February, I believe.</p> <p>Cliff told me that he only visited the airport in 1972 and he was given a wonderful cup of Ceylon tea - he sent his best wishes to all his fans in Sri Lanka through that interview broadcast on the SLBC.</p> <p>The SLBC has featured some of the finest talents of the nation - Pandit Amaradeva, H.R. Jothipala, Nanda Malini, Premasiri Khemadasa, Nimal Mendis, Bill Forbes, (who starred with Cliff Richard in ‘Oh Boy’ the television show in London) Cliff Foenander (who went on to sing in Las Vegas), Des Kelly, Mignonne Fernando and the Jetliners, Clarence Wijewardene, Annesley Malewana, A.E. Manoharan, Desmond de Silva, C.T. Fernando and a whole host of artistes became household names through the airwaves of the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation.</p> <p>I have always maintained that the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation is a national treasure of Sri Lanka - I was delighted to hear that a museum, a linguistic library, a disaster communications unit and a magazine launch commemorated this epoch making day. Anura Priyadharshana Yapa, the Minister of Mass Media and Information appreciated the successful achievements of the SLBC for the last 40 years.</p> <p>Minister Yapa pointed out the importance of maintaining a ‘Linguistic Laboratory’ and requested the authorities to let the public to get access to it, which he believed could serve in its best capacity of the purpose of maintaining such a unit.</p> <p>Sri Lanka can be proud that she is up with the great broadcasting nations of the USA, UK and Germany - it was Edward Harper, a British engineer, who, together with Ceylonese radio enthusiasts carried out the first radio experiments when her arrived in Ceylon in 1921 as Chief Engineer of the Telegraph Office in Colombo. Sri Lanka celebrated 80 years in broadcasting in 2005.</p> <p>The Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation needs to lead the way in digital broadcasting and I am convinced that with the right financial support, the SLBC will be a shining beacon in the world of broadcasting - in the years to come. It also happens to be the oldest radio station in South Asia. Vernon Corea was one of the pioneers of this radio station and he was deeply proud to be part of the history of Radio Ceylon. Dodd was charismatic and innovative and there was a real 'buzz' in Radio Ceylon after his arrival.</p> <p>South Asian leaders and ministers of the British Commonwealth, including India's Jawaharlal Nehru, Ceylon's J.R.Jayawardene and Ghulam Mohammed, decided that Asia needed something like the Marshall Plan that had just helped rebuild Europe after the ravages of war.</p> <p>The Colombo Plan, which resulted from these deliberations, was the first multilateral effort in foreign aid in Asia. The key donor countries were Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Britain and the United States, and the organisation included Asian members of the Commonwealth like India, Ceylon and Pakistan.</p> <p>Australia sent Clifford.R.Dodd to Radio Ceylon under the 'Plan' and it was a 'ground breaking' experience, as far as broadcasting in Ceylon was concerned. Radio Ceylon grew in popularity and stature. The 'Playback & Fast Forward Magazine in India noted: ' For millions in this country, Radio Ceylon was not just a broadcasting station. It had a form and a personality.</p> <p>It was a companion who added a meaning to their lives, filled their vacant hours and has now left them with a host of memories of the melodious times which is hard to forget......' According to Panos ' Soon after conquering Mount Everest half a century ago, Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay turned on their transistor radio - and the first thing they heard was an overseas broadcast of Radio Ceylon, from more than 3,000 kilometres away.</p> <p>They joined millions of people across the Indian subcontinent who regularly tuned in to these broadcasts.</p> <p>A pioneer in broadcasting in Asia, Radio Ceylon for decades informed and entertained an overseas audience many times the population of Ceylon, now Sri Lanka....' I have such fond childhood memories of Radio Ceylon - my late father Vernon Corea joined the station in 1956 as a relief announcer. His appoint was recommended by the late great Livy Wijemanne and endorsed by Clifford Dodd.</p> <p>As a child I was in awe as soon as I entered the foyer - you heard the hum, the buzz, the multitude of people - all coming in to meet the radio personalities, place their advertisements, participate in radio programs.</p> <p>I remember as a member of the S.Thomas' Prep School Choir being involved in a broadcast. I remember meeting the great Duke Ellington to who visited Radio Ceylon and played in the studio.</p> <p>My childhood was surrounded by some of the greatest broadcasters in the world - 957 by the Director of the Commercial Service, Clifford R.Dodd. Vernon had the joined the 'greats' - Livy Wijemanne, Pearl Ondaatje, Tim Horshington, Greg Roskowski, Jimmy Bharucha,Claude Selveratnam, Mil Sansoni, Eardley Peiris,Shirley Perera, Bob Harvie, Chris Greet, Prosper Fernando, Ameen Sayani (of Binaca Geet Mala fame), S.P.Mylvaganam (the first Tamil Announcer on the Commercial Service), Thevis Guruge H.M.Gunasekera, Nihal Bhareti, Leon Belleth, Vijaya Corea, to name a few.</p> <p>They blazed a trail in broadcasting in South Asia. My father also worked with the legendary Karunaratne Abeysekera, they were very close friends.</p> <p>My father presented radio programmes such as: Two for the Money, Kiddies Korner, Old Folks at Home, To Each His Own, Ponds Hit Parade, Saturday Stars, Take it or Leave It, Maliban Bandwagon (Maliban Show), Roving Mike, Dial-a-disc, Holiday Choice, Sunday Choice and many more.</p> <p>These were the glory days of Radio Ceylon. I hope that President Mahinda Rajapakse will invest in the future of the SLBC. Vernon Corea had his office within this building - first as Business Manager of the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation and then as Director News of the SLBC. Churches remember all people with Autism and Asperger's Syndrome.</p> <p> Autism Sunday was an idea shared by Vernon's son and daught-in-law, Ivan and Charika Corea - they initiated 2002 as Autism Awareness Year and launched the Autism Awareness Campaign. Vernon was a passionate supporter of the campaign in the UK because of his grandson, Charin, who has autism spectrum disorder.</p> <p>Vernon wrote to key people, he lobbied others in his efforts to support the Autism Awareness Campaign. He wrote these prayers for Autism Sunday - services were held across the UK by churches of all denominations and Christians remembered the 520,000 autistic community in prayer, they prayed for breakthroughs for people with autism.</p> <p>What is Autism?</p> <p>Autism/pervasive developmental disorder refers to a whole group of disorders characterised by delays in the development of multiple basic functions including socialisation and communication.</p> <p>Symptoms of PDD include severe communication problems such as understanding language; difficulty to relating to people, objects and events, unusual play with toys and other objects; difficulty with changes in routine or familiar surroundings and repetitive body movements or patterns.</p> <p>Autism, the experts suggest, is a brain disorder characterised by impaired social interaction and communication skills and limited activities and interests is the most characteristic and best studied PDD.</p> <p>Other types of PDD are Asperger's syndrome, Rett's Syndrome,childhood disintegrative disorders and others.</p> <p>Autism is a neuro- developmental disorder - all of us have neurones in our brains to process thought,they need to fire in the correct order - in the brains of an autistic child or adult they don't fire at all or they just misfire.</p> <p>That is why you cannot give an autistic child complex commands.Everything has to be kept well and truly simple.</p> <p>As in other parts of the world, including the United Kingdom, parents, carers and autists are struggling to access public services in health, education, specialist speech therapy and respite care.</p> <p>They say there are 38,000 autistic people in the land of Vernon's birth - the island of Sri Lanka.Thousands of autistic children are kept at home without any access to education. There are issues of culture and autism is also confused with mental illness. Medical and education professionals need training in autism. There are children who remain undiagnosed. There is a lack of awareness of autism in the provincial towns and villages.</p> <p>Vernon attended the historic debate on Autism to mark 2002 as Autism Awareness Year in the House of Commons in Westminster Hall in the Palace of Westminister in London. The Autism debate was initiated by the distinguished parliamentarian Linda Perham MP. She spoke with passion about the lives of autistic people, the hardships, the lack of public services and she spoke in the House of Commons about Charin, Vernon's grandson - when Vernon heard this he was moved to tears. </p> <p>After this historic House of Commons debate, Vernon met with Linda Perham MP and the representatives of most of the key organisations who had anything to do with autism in the UK, outside parliament. He told Linda Perham how grateful he was that she had launched the most successful debate on Autism in parliament - it was supported by parliamentarians of all parties.</p> <p>Vernon also attended the first ever Service for Autism held at St.Paul's Cathedral in London on 10th February 2002. Over 600 people attended this historic service including autistic children and adults. Also present at this function were the former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom John Major (a cricket fanatic), Lord Naseby and other members of parliament. Vernon was keen to meet the Sri Lankan cricket team - like the millions in Sri Lanka he loved cricket. He has attended many a cricket test in the UK. Vernon has also interviewed countless Sri Lankan cricketers and introduced cricket matches in Colombo over the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation long before Sri Lanka gained Test status. Despite his frailty he was determined to make the journey to the House of Commons.</p> <p>This particular visit was made possible by two ex-Royalists, Dr.Daya Panditha-Gunewardena(Chairman of the BCCSL UK) and former Royal Captain Asitha Jayaweera (Vernon interviewed him back in the days of Radio Ceylon) .</p> <p>Vernon was touched by the courtesy extended to him by Sri Lankan cricketers like Mahela Jayewardene who came up and spoke to him.
